1 King Street, Belper, has long been a fixture of the town’s commercial heart, serving the local community in various ways over the decades. Originally, this building housed a branch of the Birmingham and Midland Bank, a financial institution established in 1836 that grew to prominence by supporting local businesses and industry across the Midlands. In Belper, the branch played a crucial role in the economic life of the town, offering banking services to traders, shopkeepers, and industrialists who contributed to the area’s thriving textile and manufacturing sectors.

As the bank expanded nationally, it underwent a series of mergers and name changes, eventually becoming known simply as the Midland Bank. By the late 20th century, it had become one of the most recognisable banking names in Britain. In 1992, Midland Bank was acquired by HSBC, and by 1999, the familiar blue signage was replaced with HSBC branding, marking the end of an era for the building’s long-standing role as a traditional high street bank.

Following its closure as a banking institution, the property changed hands and was repurposed for retail use, reflecting shifts in Belper’s evolving high street economy. More recently in 2025, 1 King Street has taken on a new identity as a the Belper Chiropractic Health Centre, dedicated to health and wellness. Just as it once provided financial support and security to local businesses and residents, it now offers a different kind of service—helping people improve their physical wellbeing through chiropractic care.
